On the summit of Santa Catalina Hill, a former Caliphal fortress was built in the s. IX century. Later, after the conquest of the city by King Ferdinand III in 1246, a Christian castle was built, which is its current form.

The National Parador was built in the 60S outside the castle but very close to it.
